Follow Your Passions

9 Jun

This is advice that I dole out to anyone and everyone who will listen! I know in our days of getting a good education, getting a good job, being all safe and secure in a 9-5 and then settling down to a big house and 1.8 kids is what we’re told to do growing up. Or at least most of us are “encouraged” to take that route. I know I always have been, my grandfather even told me when I was in Jr High that I should become a plumber or electrician because that’s where the real security and money is. Umm…yeah sorry Gramps but I’m WAY to girly for that stuff! Yes I can build stuff and I am very handy around the house, however I don’t think I’d trust myself in those areas…too clumsy and I know I’d hate it!

There was once a study done by Yale in the 50s. They kept track of 100 people from the graduating class (probably mostly men, but that’s not the point!) Out of these 100 I believe all but a few became millionaires after 25 or so years. But the funny thing was, I think it was around 90 or so of them didn’t take the traditional route after graduation, they all chose to follow their passions, which for most this meant starting their own businesses. So years later, ALL of the people who followed their passions had become millionaires, yet the ones that took the square route were less lucky. Yes some of them may have become giant CEOs with private jets, but I can guess they probably weren’t as happy at the others!

Why am I bringing this up you ask?! Well I love to make things and be very crafty. So yesterday I picked up 2 books at the Library about crafting businesses, because I was also born to be an entrepreneur so these two blend really nicely for me. In these books they profiled people like Grace from Design*Sponge and Holly from Decor8 as well as countless others who had a knack and passion for creating pretty things, and ran with it. Now both of these women have HUGE sites with thousands of readers, they now have ad revenue coming in, they get to work for themselves and set their own hours and income. They can sell their stuff, some are getting book deals (like Holly who is writing her book from EUROPE!) The thing is, when you follow your passion, you don’t have to have a set out plan, at least nothing really strict and rigid. Because one thing often leads to another, something even bigger and better than you can imagine! If you can believe in yourself and have faith in your talents and passions, magical things can happen!

Look at Kandee Johnson for example, in her ‘Go Get Your Dreams and My Story’ video she tells us all of the things she’d been through. Which is a lot and more than I could imagine! She also inspires you to follow your heart and do what sets your heart on fire and makes you feel alive. This is so true! Go do it!

My one advice for people following their passions: Figure out what you love to do, and what you are naturally at least semi-good at, what makes you feel alive, then go for it. But don’t limit yourself to being just a “clothing designer” or just a “horse trainer”. The thing with following your passions is, you usually end up becoming an entrepreneur in the process, and sometimes being an entrepreneur is a huge part of your dream already (like mine.) So the key is to never ever put yourself in a box. As humans we are always growing, and the best business advice I’ve gotten so far was from Ali Brown “Design your business around who you are.” If you are always growing and changing that means your passions and business will be too! Maybe not in huge ways but in small ways its inevitable. So go with it, grow, change and embrace it. Remember you can only fail if you give up!

Please visit these links, watch Kandee’s videos, go read and learn about other people who have followed their dreams and then go out and DO! Take action. Believe in yourself and the dreams God has given you. When he closes one door, he opens another, and it is often way bigger and more beautiful than the one before it! He will never give you more than you can handle, I promise. If you follow your dreams you will never truly regret it I promise!

God Bless,
